I recently had the pleasure of hearing pianist Anna Shelest at the Golden Key series at the Bechstein Piano Centre and was very impressed by her fantastic technique and musicianship. This month, Shelest will be performing a free solo recital at Paul Hall at the Juilliard School in New York.

197Multiple-award winning Uruguayan film “THE CIRCLE” – EL CIRCULO will be shown at the MUSEO DEL BARRIO – CICLO NUEVO CINE on Wednesday, December 2, 2009  at 6:30 pm. The museum is located at 1230 Fifth Avenue (at 104th Street) in New York. Admission is free

Wednesday is movie night in Latin America, and at El Museo. This session of Nuevo Cine focuses on former Tupamaro leader Dr. Engler, who was held hostage for thirteen years during the Uruguayan dictatorship. Today, a renowned Swedish citizen and scientist, he revisits the places of his painful past, painting an intimate and disturbing portrait of life in prison during a dictatorship. Directed by José Pedro Charlo and Aldo Garay, EL CIRCULO reflects the power of a person facing adversity. Co-Director of the film J. P. Charlo will be present at the screening to share some of his experiences making the movie.

This event is organized by the The Uruguayan Cultural Group of New York and El Museo del Barrio, with the support of the Ministry of Culture & Education in Uruguay.

Sam Sadigursky Words Project III CD Release Concert
Galapagos Art Space, 16 Main St. Brooklyn, NY

Words Project III, which will come out on New Amsterdam Records on January 29th, is a collection of 18 miniatures for a number of different groupings and features many of Sam’s favorite vocalists and musicians, including Michael Leonhart, who also recorded and co-produced. Celebrating its release, there will be a Words Project extravaganza at Galapagos in DUMBO on 1/29/10, featuring performers and songs from all three albums.

A melodic, lyrical composer and performer, Rob Mosher is a musician well versed in the jazz and classical worlds, committed to furthering the growth and combination of the two. Specializing on oboe, English horn and soprano sax, Mosher is a proven creator with a uniqueness of voice and an interest in exploring genre fluidity. Recipient of the 2009 ASCAP Young Composer Award, Rob recently released his critically lauded debut CD Storytime – The Tortoise which has been called “heartbreakingly beautiful, with melodies that stop the listener in [their] tracks” by the Hartford Courant (2008).

As a composer and bandleader, Rob’s ensembles further demonstrate a blending and furthering of jazz and classical music, including his 10-piece ensemble “Storytime” and a jazz quartet (Rob Mosher Quartet).
