New York City-based composer David Claman is releasing his new album Gradus on Albany Records in October of 2020. Claman has held residencies at the MacDowell Colony and the Bellagio Center in Italy. He has received grants from The Fromm Foundation and a Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship to India, where he was a visiting professor at Delhi University. He is also an Associate Professor at Lehman College-CUNY where he teaches music theory and composition.
Drawing from a constellation of inspirations, from Melville’s Moby Dick, Hendrix’s guitar work, from India’s classical music to Johannes Ockeghem’s Missa Prolationum, the works on Gradus speak to each other across decades, continents, and centuries of shared influences. Claman says “I finally found the through line that connected all my work. Maybe I was the last to know it. There- an underlying and unspoken yet certain spirituality. Just in time for our very uncertain world.”
